10/27/2009 - Adventist Medical Center Hires Leslie Furlow As Vice President of Patient Care Services

Nationwide Recruiting Campaign Brings Seasoned Administrator,
Nurse and Business Woman to Portland

Portland, Ore. – Adventist Medical Center has hired Leslie Furlow as vice president of patient care services. Furlow's appointment follows Carol Kunau's retirement from the position last month and an extensive national recruiting campaign conducted by Adventist Medical Center.

In her new role, Furlow will oversee patient care services for a variety of departments including: nursing services, pulmonary services, cardiology services, pharmacy, preoperative services, the emergency department, disaster programs, palliative care, and the hospital’s hyperbaric program.

"We are very pleased to welcome Leslie to Adventist Health and to have attracted such a highly qualified candidate to our health system," said Tom Russell, president and CEO of Adventist Medical Center. "Leslie brings extensive medical, management and administrative experience to Adventist. I am confident she will accelerate Adventist Health’s distinguished patient care by providing mission-driven healthcare our patients can have faith in, delivered at every interaction."

Furlow brings more than 25 years of medical experience to Adventist Medical Center. Prior to joining the hospital, she served as president and founder of AchieveMentors Inc., a national consulting firm for hospitals. Furlow simultaneously served as managing partner of HardinessMentors LLC, a research-based leadership development program for healthcare managers, which she co-founded in 2002. Additionally, Furlow spent nine years as an adjunct graduate professor for the University of Texas at Arlington, teaching nursing administration and nurse practitioner students.

Her career also includes tenures as a family nurse practitioner, vice president of Higman Healthcare in St. Petersburg, Fla., and as assistant administrator patient care services at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, N.D.

"Adventist Medical Center has a long history of providing superior patient care and I'm excited for this opportunity to work with the hospital's medical team and staff to best serve our patients," said Furlow.

Furlow earned a doctorate of philosophy in management from Madison University, a master's of public health from Loma Linda University, as well as a master's of science and bachelor's of science in nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington. Furlow and her husband, Bob Bagwell, are relocating from Cleburne, Texas to Portland, Ore.
